Determining a universe of securities that meet our investment criteria
We use a quantitative approach to screen thousands of companies to identify those that meet the criteria we believe define successful investments. These characteristics include above average return-on-equity, well managed balance sheets, strong cash-flow generation and a consistent history of dividend payments.
Forming a macro view on the global economy
A top down approach is used to analyze the economy to identify risks to the portfolios and to determine which geographic regions and industry sectors may outperform the broader market. Based on our forecast we may tactically shift our portfolio mix and/or place greater emphasis on companies within certain countries or sectors.
Monitoring technical trends to assist in the timing of our purchases
We analyze the historical and recent price movements of the market and each security to assist in the timing of our purchases. This process helps reduce the probability of purchasing securities that, despite having the characteristics of excellent companies and being attractively valued, may remain depressed in price relative to the market.
Adhering to a strict sell discipline
From time to time good companies falter in their strategy, securities become overvalued, or better investment opportunities become available. Using a combination of fundamental and technical analysis we actively manage the portfolio to continue to sell positions that need to be sold. Maintaining a strict sell discipline is integral in continuing to add value to a portfolio.
